Instructor: Liat Alon, PhD

Dr. Liat Alon will lead us in a mini-course to explore timely questions related to the Islamic religious tradition and its connections with Judaism. Together, we will study issues like the Muslim relationship with Yom Kippur, how Jerusalem is discussed in the Quran, and the connection between the prophet Muhammed. We will ask questions like, "How did the concept of Jihad become a central religious pillar for some Muslims?" and "How are the terms Allah and Elohim connected?" Each of these questions will allow us to know and understand more about the geopolitical climate of the Middle East and gain more nuance in understanding current events like the recent conflicts between Israel and the Gaza Strip. Watching Life of Muhammed on Amazon Prime Video (amazon.com) is recommended but not required to participate in this mini-course.
Dr. Liat Alon, received her PhD from Ben Gurion University. With expertise in Middle Eastern Studies, Jewish Studies, and Israel Studies, Dr. Alon's specialties include Middle Eastern Jewries in the 20th century, as well as building social history, oral history, and microhistory with a focus on the connections between modernity, family, and Jewish societies. Dr. Alon is the Director of Community Activities and Education at HUC-JIR Cincinnati and the Israel Institute Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
