SVARA

Mission: SVARA is a traditionally radical yeshiva dedicated to the serious study of Talmud and committed to the Queer experience.

SVARA is a place where people of diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds, of all sexual orientations, gender expressions and identities, ethnic heritage, racial experience, skin color, class background, and religious observance can gain the necessary text skills and halachic (Jewish legal) expertise to enrich, push, penetrate and contribute to the evolving Jewish tradition – and be pushed, challenged and enriched by it. Founded in 2003, SVARA works to create an interpretive community of “players” who will restore Judaism to its radical roots so that it might once again be a voice of courageous moral conscience in the world and reflect the truest possible vision of what it means to be a fully human, human being.
