Sam Mihara, a second generation Japanese American, was 9 years old when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entered WWII. Sam and his family were forced from their home by armed military guards and relocated to the Heart Mountain prison camp in desolate northern Wyoming where they lived in one small room for three years.

Sam will discuss his family’s experiences at Heart Mountain and the racial animus that led to the imprisonment of 120,000 individuals of Japanese descent. A national lecturer on the topic of mass imprisonment, Sam has visited detention centers across the country and asks the question, “Can such civil rights and human rights violations happen again?”

Sam is a retired rocket scientist for The Boeing Company, where he helped to insert many satellites into orbit. He has spoken to over 65,000 individuals and has lectured before Congress and at many leading universities including Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. Sam will be signing copies of his book “Blindsided: The Life and Times of Sam Mihara.”
