For questions on using the digital portal, find an answer in the FAQs.

To help you determine which calling script to use, open the portal and get started. If you need help navigating the portal, please watch the how-to video, above. Once you see the record on the portal, take a look at the section labeled "Giving History." If this community member gave a gift in 2021, use the script labeled "Has a 2021 Gift Listed". If there is no gift recorded for 2021, use the script labeled "No 2021 Gift Listed".

The scripts are just to give you an idea of how to have a conversation asking for a commitment to Jewish Federation's Annual Campaign. If you know the person, or know about the group that they are in, please feel free to modify the script and have a meaningful conversation with the person you are talking to. Super Sunday, especially this year, is about reconnecting with community, so please keep that in mind for your conversations.

STEP 1: MAKE A MEANINGFUL CONNECTION, MAKE THE ASK

“Hello, this is (your name). I’m a volunteer calling from the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati’s Super Sunday on behalf of our community. May I speak to (first name and last name)?”

Optional: Check-in and ask how the person is doing, make sure to let them respond. An example could be:

Check-in and ask how the person is doing, make sure to let them respond. An example could be: “I hope you are doing well, given all of the challenges of this past year.”

Optional: Use what you know to connect with each community member and start a conversation. Some examples could be:

“I see from my list that you…

  • are on a Jewish Federation committee…
  • like to attend Federation events…
  • have been giving to Federation for more than 25 years…
  • are a part of Women’s Philanthropy…
  • are an active part of our Jewish young adult community…

that's great! Thank you for all that you do."

Let them know you are calling to ask for a gift to the Annual Campaign. An example of this could be:

“I am calling today to help raise money for our community and those in need. With your past support and through the Federation’s Annual Campaign, we have been able to strengthen the Jewish community. We are raising dollars for partner agencies to run programs to meet critical needs.

If you make your pledge/gift today, Victory Wholesale will match your gift dollar for dollar up to $10,000—DOUBLING YOUR IMPACT. And, thanks to a generous grant from The Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati, any increase you make over your gift last year will be matched 2-to-1, tripling your impact! Because of the greater need this year and this match opportunity, (First name), would you consider a gift of $______?” Refer to Ask amount in the portal.

If the donor does not wish to increase their gift, ask if they would consider maintaining their last gift. An example of this could be:

“We are working hard to make sure the most vulnerable in our community have the support they need. In (refer to last year the community member gave) you gave a gift of (refer to last gift amount). Can we count on you for that amount again this year?”

STEP 2:  YOUR RESPONSE

If the community member says “yes,” thank them sincerely. An example of this could be:

“Thank you for your generosity. You are helping many people survive, and thrive, in Cincinnati and abroad.”

In the portal, click Tell us how it went and select Pledge. You will have the opportunity to enter the pledge amount and any special instructions or updates, including how the donor would like to be billed: quarterly, monthly, or annually.

Gifts should be paid before the end of December 2022. Default billing will be in May.

If the community member wants to pay now by credit card, let them know that for security purposes, volunteers are not taking credit card payments. Instead, the community member can go online and make a payment now at give.jewishcincinnati.org. They can also call 513-985-1500 or send an email to supersunday@jfedcin.org and a Federation professional will assist them.

If the donor would like to learn more about the Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign, let them know we can send them additional information. An example of that could be:

“I would be happy to send more details on the Annual Campaign. I can send you a letter or an email, which would you prefer?”

In the portal, click Tell us how it went and select Contact later / mail. Under Have someone contact, please select Send additional information via mail or Send additional information via email. Confirm the community member’s mailing address and email address and please send an email with any contact information changes or requests for information about any specific area to supersunday@jfedcin.org.

If the donor says no to a pledge, do not argue or debate. Refer to the “Overcoming Objections” section, if needed. Thank them for their time, ask for any information missing from their record. An example of that could be:

“Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with me today. I see that we’re missing your email address, can you let me know what it is? We’d love to keep you updated on what’s going on in the Jewish community.”

In the portal, click Tell us how it went and select Decline. Note the reason for the decline in the area marked Additional donor comments. Note any updates to contact information in the area marked Donor information updates.

STEP 3: VERIFY INFORMATION

If the community member agreed to make a pledge, verify their email and contact information and ask for any missing details.

Let them know that they will be included in the Federation’s Donor Honor Roll. An example of that could be:

“Can I verify your name and contact information? As a donor to the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, you’ll be recognized in the Donor Honor Roll for your total giving through the Federation over the course of the year. A full alphabetical listing of donors within their giving levels will be shared at a few select events, including our Annual Meeting and on our website.”

If the donor says no, ask if they would consider a smaller gift of $36. An example of this could be:

“We are working hard to make sure the most vulnerable in our community have the support they need. Would you consider a gift of $36?”

“Hello, this is (your name). I’m a volunteer with the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. May I speak to (first name)? (For donors who give with their spouse, ask for either donor.)

Hi (first name), I’m calling to say “Thank You” for your gift to the 2022 Annual Campaign.

Today is Super Sunday, and because you’ve already made a gift commitment this year, I have the pleasure of calling to simply say ‘Thank You!’

We appreciate your generosity and together, we are building exceptional lives in Cincinnati, in Israel, and around the world. Thank you. Our Annual Meeting is on May 18 and we hope to see you there too.”

If you can, please engage in a conversation with your donors. You can ask…

  • > how they are doing.
  • > if they would like to get more involved in the community and how.
  • > why they give to our Jewish community.
  • > what they are looking forward to doing in our Jewish community post COVID-19.
  • > what being Jewish means to them.

Please take notes while you’re on your calls and email them to supersunday@jfedcin.org. Any and all information you share will help us better serve our donors and our community!

Hi (first name),

This is (your name), a volunteer with the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati’s Annual Campaign. Today is Super Sunday – Jewish Cincinnati’s largest one-day give-a-thon. This year more than ever, our community faces tremendous challenges. With your support, the Federation’s Annual Campaign is able to strengthen the Jewish community by raising dollars for partner agencies to run programs to meet critical needs.

I’m contacting you today to ask you to consider a gift of $______ to the Federation’s 2022 Campaign. With this year’s matching programs, a donation today could do three times as much good. To make a donation online, visit give.jewishcincinnati.org. If you’d rather send me the amount you’d like to donate – or pledge to pay by December 31, 2022 – I’d be happy to enter it for you.

In the meantime, thank you so much for your consideration and have a great day!

Sincerely,

(your first name)

OVERCOMING OBJECTIONS

This is a quick reference guide to some of the possible concerns you may hear on the phone. For any other questions, please click Get Resources.

I am concerned about my family and friends in Ukraine and can’t give right now.

Say “I understand. ” Tell them you’re sorry to hear it and ask if they need help with their situation. Make sure they know about the Crisis in the Ukraine Hotline, 513-766-3333. They can get help learning about or navigating the resources available to family or friends in Ukraine.

I want to support the Jewish community in Ukraine.

Say “I understand. The Jewish Federation of Cincinnati has established an emergency fund. One hundred percent of funds will be allocated through Jewish Federations’ core partners to provide critical welfare where it is needed most, and support to protect and safeguard Ukraine's Jewish community as well as Jews in neighboring countries.” They can give at jewishcincinnati.org/Ukraine.

I don’t want to make a gift at this time.
Say “Thank you. Is there another time we can call you? If so, when? Later today, another day, sometime next week?” In the portal, click Tell us how it went and select Contact later / mail. You will be able to select the appropriate timing.

I don’t know where my money goes.
Say “I can tell you about how the funds raised by the Campaign are allocated.” Refer to Where Your Money Goes on the Federation’s website.

What has Federation's response to COVID-19 been?
Say “I can provide more information about Federation's COVID-19 response.”
Refer to this document on the Federation’s website.

What’s the difference between the Federation and the Foundation?
Say “The Jewish Foundation is a private foundation that is legally separate from the Jewish Federation, which is a nonprofit organization. The Foundation makes investments in the local community from assets derived in large part from the sale of the Jewish Hospital. The Federation raises funds from the community and allocates them to programs locally, in Israel and around the world.”

I already gave.
Say, “Thank you so much for your generosity, and I apologize for the confusion. Please tell me the amount of your gift to the 2021 Annual Campaign, so that we can update our records.” In the portal, click Tell us how it went and select Decline. You will be able to enter a reason for the decline and any additional comments.

If a donor is upset.
Donors deserve to have their concerns addressed. Keep the dialogue open, validate, empathize, and acknowledge the concern. Say, “I’m glad you brought that up…”, “Yes, I’ve felt that way myself…”, or “I never thought of it that way…”.

If you don’t have the answer to a question, tell the donor you are a volunteer and that you will share your concern with a Federation professional.

In the portal, click Tell us how it went and select Decline. You will be able to enter a reason for the decline, in this case Complaint, and any additional comments.
